i forgot

i was going through some old photos of max for a school project the other day.
i don't know how, but i had forgotten how cute he was as a baby.
isn't it sad that you can forget something like that?

relax

a couple of weeks ago wade and i took a little trip to st. john. it's the smallest of the three u.s. virgin islands, and the quietest. we thought it would be the perfect time to take a trip, just the two of us, before the baby comes.
i didn't realize how exhausted i was until we got there and all i wanted to do was sit and nap on the beach.
it was perfect.
these pics are kind of boring. just lots of blue water and white sand.

one day we went over to the british virgin islands to see the baths, an amazing jumble of house-sized boulders that were spewed up long ago by a volcano. the pile of boulders creates a labyrinth of tunnels and "rooms" and secret passageways. i stuck to the more defined routs to avoid getting my belly jammed and stuck in some precarious position. wade made his own way climbing in and out of crevices. i kept thinking how much whitney would have LOVED this place.

wade did a few scuba dives and a deep sea fishing trip while i, you guessed it, sat on the beach and read my book.
heaven.

can you believe that water?
we did lots and lots of snorkeling, my favorite thing to do when i'm pregnant.
you know, suddenly weightless. i always fall asleep.
this was just what we needed.
thanks mom for holding down the fort!

where are you summer?

it's been cold.
and cloudy.
and rainy.
and annoying because i'm ready for warm weather.
(especially since only one pair of my pants fits anymore and i will not purchase maternity pants. will not.)
did i ever share some of the photos that my awesome brother-in-law, mike, took of my family last summer?
i love them.
i love them.
and they are summer to me.

some of these are so funny to me.

derby champ

max had his first pinewood derby last week.
did you know what a monumental event this is for boys and their dads?
i had no idea.
i think it's more important to the dads, for whatever reason.
a chance to redeem the past?
maybe to relive the glory days?
i don't know, but i imagine in the 'good ol' days' there were some seriously heated arguments over photo finishes.
not any more. not with tracks complete with sensors and computer software that tracks and records each car from start to finish and figures average times and on and on.
uh...do guys actually care this much?
i guess i've never been very competitive about anything, so i wouldn't understand.
before the races max kept complaining about his chest hurting.
i finally realized he was nervous.
"what? oh, max, this is just all for fun. it doesn't matter who wins."
but it was still pretty cool when he took first place
with his commemorative 2010 olympic canadian gold medal hockey team car.
(the underside was painted gold)

i think this picture is so funny because max looks nothing like himself here.

thanks grandpa, for getting the axels and wheels super super duper smooth.

just over 6 months

about two an a half months to go.
i like this stage in my pregnancies,
when my stomach has finally caught up with my butt and i don't feel so disproportionate.
gotta love those "grandy girl" genes.

costco offerings

went to costco the other day with my mom to stock up before our trip and we had a little mishap.
actually more of an idiotic maneuver performed by one of the the "safety team" employees there.
we were heading towards the main big aisle that goes to the back of the store from behind the shelving that holds the big rafts and playhouses and outdoor stuff.
you know, the big giant towering shelves that you can't see over that should probably make someone semi-cautious when approaching with a gigantic double-wide heavy weight costco shopping cart.
well, this above-mentioned employee decided to throw all caution to the wind in the name of fetching something from the back of the store for whatever customer stood waiting at the register, tapping his fingers, trying to be patient for the retrieval of whatever thing it was he forgot to pick up.
this done by running FULL MAN SPEED pushing one of those mammoth carts.
wouldn't you know, whitney runs out into the aisle at exactly the same moment mr train-out-of-control comes careening by,
and guess who gets tagged.
yup.
whitney.
snagged out of nowhere.
she just started kind of whimpering, and when whitney complains that something hurts it's for real.
this girl falls down the stairs and doesn't cry!
and he just STOOD there, probably about to pee his pants for fear of losing his job.
i didn't even hear him apologize. just asked if she was okay.
i don't know how, but she was okay.
IDIOT!
my mom let him have it. she was FUMING. i had to laugh at her.

in the way of other costco offerings, there were actually ranunculus that day.
they rarely carry them and when they do it's just one bunch at a time.
oh, they make me happy.

so, thank you costco for an exciting afternoon and a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
