let's have a talk.
i have a dilemma.
well, actually it' not a dilemma since there really is no urgency or need to make up my mind on this matter...
except that i'm always mapping out my dream kitchen in my mind and there's this big empty spot above my range that i can't seem to fill.
which hood? which hood?
let's discuss the merits of each, shall we?

first of all, i'm a huge fan of mixing classic, clean white with the natural tones of wood.
that's a pretty traditional combination. think farm house table in an old fashioned white kitchen...
but i've never seen a hood done in unfinished pine like this.
awesome. so awesome.
i bet it's a bear to de-grease, though?

here are a few hoods (above) that seem to be built right into the walls of these kitchens. plaster? obviously very custom and seamless.

there's nothing like a big ol' huge statement piece of a hood like a totally conspicuous metal one.

the three above are pretty traditional. pretty, but nothing too exciting. the one above is an example of the wrong way to do a stove top and hood. aside from the molding being way too fussy (that's obviously just preference) the function of the space is so thoughtless. i absolutely need lots and lots of counter space on each side of the stove for prepping and chopping and setting stuff down while i'm cooking. granted, i'm probably a lot messier when i cook that a lot of people, but come on. not even 6 inches?

you could go super contemporary or just classic and understated with these.

when i saw this one it stopped me in my tracks. i had never considered a carved stone surround. WOW! stunning!
the possibilities are endless. you could do any kind of stone (assuming the budget was endless, which in my dream kitchen it is. i'll have to come to terms with that when we ever build a house again.)
you could even do a cast stone surround like on a fireplace probably. hmmmm.
you understand my dilemma now?

I really like the first, pine one. Looks simple and rustic-ish but nice. You are right though, de-greasing could be a nightmare. Grease seems to get sticky and on wood...ick!
Really liked the black canopy looking one. But, if you don't have 8 burners and you are only covering 4 it might look funny smaller....but maybe not.
LOVE the one you liked with the arch and raw metal and recessed windows. If at all possible I would make that happen. SO beautiful.
So, what about showing us a picture of your stove area? Maybe we could help you pick what looks best in your kitchen.
I'm with you on needing space on either side of the stove. There was plenty of space across from that one crowded stove but who wants to whisk their chopped stuff around to the stove and risk dropping some, if not A LOT of chopped stuff on the floor. I already get stuff on the floor, that would just make it worse. But, I think this must just come down to preference. On the sides of that stove it looks like there might be slide out spice racks...it would be nice to have slide out spice racks at eye level by the stove. But that close? I don't know?
I LOVE the pintrest one with the big metal hood I just love that whole kitchen! I would make the table bigger to fit twelve people and then I would be happy!
it is a tribute to you that you created an engaging blog post consisting completely of range hoods. i don't know why this was so funny to me, but last night at around 9pm i read it and laughed thinking about you, thinking about range hoods.
i like the architectural digest one, but that's probably pretty obvi. lines, not fussy, etc. etc. the wood would be cool in the right kitchen, but grease yada yada. you'd think they'd have a way to treat it so that wouldn't be a problem though.
So many great ones. I like 2,8 ,9 10 . . .
tend to like the more traditional ones, but
I guess that's my style. Beginning to realize that!
I've been wanting to re-do my cabinets white sooo bad, and a lot of these pics I have pinned on pinterest. So, I like your style, girl.
